FAQ

What should I do while I’m in Pittsburgh?

Check out our recommendations!

What’s with the blast furnace?

The Carrie Blast Furnaces rule. They were a critical part of US Steel for nearly a century, and have been a National Heritage Landmark since 1996.

One of the first things we did as Pittsburgh residents was attend the Furnace’s Festival of Combustion — and we’ve learned so much about local history, and US labor history, from their programming.

If you’ll let us wax poetic for a second — the Blast Furnaces feel really emblematic of what we love about Pittsburgh. Community members fought to preserve its complex history, artists made cool stuff out of its discarded materials, and there’s been a real attention to rewilding its ecologically exploited grounds.

We think they’re special, and we hope you will too. You can learn more about the history here and here — or you can take a tour if you’re sticking around for a while after the wedding!

Where should I stay?

We have a hotel block at the Westin Pittsburgh in the Cultural District, reserve your room here by 8/23:

https://www.marriott.com/event-reservations/reservation-link.mi?id=1701882443121&key=GRP&app=resvlink

It’s centrally located and there’s access to some solid restaurants/bars/things to do. If you can find a better rate Airbnb-ing or at a hotel elsewhere, go for it (but it’s Steelers season — so book early!)

Reach out if you’re booking elsewhere and have questions about the area. Pittsburgh has 90 neighborhoods and they’re all unique. Happy to make recommendations!

Why are you getting married in Pittsburgh when so many of your guests are in Chicago/Iowa/Illinois/etc.?

On the one hand, we’re sorry to make so many folks travel. On the other hand, we’re excited to show everyone our new home. Pittsburgh may not be at the top of your vacation destination list, but we truly think it’s a world class city. If you have time to explore a bit, we’ve got a list of suggestions (and a few dozen other ideas, if you really get us going).

How should I dress?

Relaxed. No, seriously. None of this will be very formal. We’re working with the venue to make sure everything is as accessible as possible — but it’s still an industrial space. If you want to wear heels, you might want to also pack some casual shoes.

What should I expect?

Our ceremony will be short and non-traditional.

We’ll do bonfires and lawn games and we’ve hired a live band.

We’re thinking of this as a big party with a lot of mushy stuff at the start.

If you have suggestions or requests — fun activities, songs for the band, dietary restrictions — let us know!
